WANT TO QUIT SMOKING? YOU CAN
The Stairstep Foundation has a new program called QuitPlan Ambassadors Program. The purpose of this initiative is to increase knowledge of QuitPlan Services for commercial tobacco users. By increasing knowledge of QuitPlan Services, we hope that more members of our community will use QuitPlan Services for help in quitting commercial tobacco use. Each participating church has a QuitPlan Services Ambassador who will be there for you every step of the way with tools, tips and support.
Smoking kills 47,000 African Americans per year. That’s more than homicides, suicides, AIDS, and car accidents combined. Tobacco use is a major contributor to the three leading causes of death among African Americans – heart disease, cancer and stroke.
More than 88% of African American adults who smoke choose menthols, and 83% of African American youth smokers use menthol. Menthol cigarettes minty flavor smooths out tobacco’s harshness, making it easier to smoke and harder to quit.
If you are a smoker but haven’t talked to anyone about it, Now is the Time. We can’t lose another life to cigarettes. Contact the QuitPlan Ambassador at your church and they will assist you in finding the support and resources you may need to quit, or contact Sylvia Amos, Director of Programs at 612-521-3110. The Benefits of Quitting:
Within 20 minutes – your blood pressure and pulse rate decrease.
In 12 hours – the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.
Within 48 hours – your sense of taste and smell improves.
Within 3 months – your long function begins to improve.
Within 9 months – coughing and shortness of breath decrease.
In 12 months – your risk of coronary heart disease is cut in half.
In 1 year – a pack-a-day smoker will save over $3,285.
In 5 years – your risk of a stroke has dramatically decreased.
